The Book

When she gave it to him as a birthday present, she said, "It will change your life." Now there it sat, on his bedside table, daring him to touch it. If it were a loaded gun, it could not have been more dangerous. "My life is just fine," he said to the thin volume, which showed a photograph of a finger on the cover, pointing at him. "It doesn't need changing."

The Bohemian

She thought: Can a poet vanquish a nation? No, but can she overcome the heart of a single, solitary person? Two, maybe? And that can make all the difference.

The Worm

She loved him, but what he had said to her once, in a heated moment, ate at her brain like a parasitic worm, its voracious appetite devouring her happiness. She had to kill the painful memory of it once and for all, but how?

The Goon

He knew he could take him down, if it came to that. The guy was a monstrosity, but not invincible, and the world would be better off without him. Even so, was it wise to confront him? Or was it better just to leave him alone?

The Friend

A friend? Is that what you call a friend? He promised! He promised, and now, when things are not quite what we expected, where is he?

Wrong

It was wrong, just wrong. No one should be allowed to say things like that. No one.

The Answer

She lay awake staring at the ceiling while the terrible question whirled in her brain like a cyclone. She couldn't live with such uncertainty, but the answer would not come. What if it never did?

Sleep

Robert was an inveterate survivor, but he had been on the mountain for five days and even he had to admit that his resources were flagging. A storm was closing in, and he had an important question to answer. Should he soldier on? Or should he rest before making the final push to the summit?

The Weapon

The situation was intolerable, just intolerable. Considering her options carefully, she decided that there were essentially two ways that she could respond. The first might not work, but the second... It would work for sure, but she had to ask herself: Was she willing to go that far? And would there be anything left to live for in the aftermath?

The Decision

Tom was very bad at making up his mind about things. Last year, he didn't get his girlfriend a present for her birthday because he couldn't decide what to get, which made her angry. So this year, she gave him three hints about what she would like and an ultimatum--buy the right gift, or get another girlfriend.

New Girl in Town

Everyone had seen the new girl hanging out in the library and at the snack bar, but the strange thing was, no one could figure out where she lived, and she wouldn't say.

The Secret

Arthur knew that Linda liked him, but she liked everyone, and he wanted her to like him more than that. So he decided to tell her the secret that he had never told anyone else, ever.

Anne of Red Roof Farm

Anne had never lived in a house with green gables, but in most other respects, she was very like that much more famous "Anne". There was one very big difference, however.

Runaway

Ronald was very well organized, so when he decided to run away from home, he was well prepared. Except, he forgot one thing that he would need very badly where he was going.

Dead Girl

A young girl is on a camping vacation with her family far from home. While they are hiking through the woods, the girl sees a message scrawled on a rock that says "AS IS SA". "I knew a girl whose initials were A.S.", she says, "but it can't be her, because she died."

Iridescent Water

Two brothers hiking in the mountains take a path they never noticed before that leads to a hidden cave. Inside the cave they find a pool of iridescent green water. Sitting next to it is a silver cup and a note that reads  ↡↺⇆⇶⟴⤱🔁🔻.
